Therapy Approach and Techniques
At Oliva, I focus on creating a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental space for clients from all backgrounds to explore emotions, work through trauma, and rebuild trust—both in themselves and with others. My approach is relational, meaning I emphasize the importance of connections, past and present, in the healing process, starting with establishing a trusting therapeutic relationship.
I prioritize understanding the root causes of emotional struggles, rather than focusing solely on managing symptoms. This is why I often work with clients who have tried skill-based approaches in the past and are now seeking a deeper, more insightful understanding of their experiences. However, I also recognize the importance of building practical skills to help navigate life’s challenges along with an insight based approach, which is why I integrate a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches to meet your unique needs.
Each approach offers different tools and perspectives to help you explore your experiences, work through emotional pain, and support your healing journey. Together, we’ll determine the best path forward to suit your specific goals and needs.

Our early relationships form the foundation for how we connect with ourselves and others, often setting the stage for attachment patterns and emotional dynamics that shape us in adulthood. Relational Psychodynamic Therapy focuses on exploring these deep-rooted patterns, especially those linked to attachment, and how they influence your present relationships and emotional life. Whether it’s difficulties with trust, intimacy, or self-worth, these patterns often reflect unmet needs or unresolved issues from early relationships.
We’ll work together to uncover unconscious thoughts and feelings that may be affecting you without your conscious awareness. By bringing these patterns to light, it aims to help you gain insight into how your past might be shaping your present—the “why” behind your emotional struggles—allowing for deeper healing and more fulfilling relationships.
This approach isn’t just about managing symptoms—it’s about gaining a deeper understanding of the root causes of your struggles. Through this awareness, it aims to help you have more options rather than defaulting to familiar reactions, helping you heal old wounds, break free from unhelpful patterns, and form healthier, more secure relationships in the present.

EMDR is an integrative therapeutic approach designed to help you process and heal from traumatic or distressing experiences that may feel stuck in both your mind and body. Trauma can overwhelm the brain’s natural ability to process information, leaving certain memories unresolved and continuing to trigger emotional distress. EMDR helps reprocess these memories, allowing them to be integrated in a way that feels less overwhelming.
This approach uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones, while you focus on specific distressing memories. These techniques aim to activate your brain’s natural healing process and facilitate the adaptive processing of painful memories, helping you maintain dual awareness—keeping one foot in the present while processing the past. EMDR integrates the cognitive, emotional, and somatic aspects of trauma processing, helping to release the mental, emotional, and physical tension tied to past events, allowing for more holistic healing.
EMDR uses a phased approach to trauma processing, allowing you to move through the healing journey at your own pace. Over time, this process aims to lessen the emotional charge of these memories so that they no longer hold the same power over your thoughts, feelings, and body.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a skills-based approach designed to help you manage intense emotions, tolerate distress, and build healthier relationships. DBT focuses on four key areas: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. Through these skills, you can gain better control over emotional reactions, handle difficult situations, and communicate more effectively in relationships.
DBT helps you balance accepting your emotions with making positive changes, giving you practical tools to navigate life with greater emotional stability and clarity.

Trauma is not just stored in your mind—it lives in your body, manifesting as tension, numbness, or physical discomfort. Somatic Therapy focuses on how emotional pain and trauma are held physically, and how reconnecting with your body can support emotional healing. By paying attention to sensations in the body, this approach helps release the tension and trauma that may be stored within you.
Somatic Therapy is particularly helpful for those who feel disconnected from their bodies or who experience physical symptoms of trauma. Through mindfulness of your body, movement, and breathwork, we’ll work together to release trauma and help you feel more at home in your body. It’s about reconnecting with yourself, both physically and emotionally.

In moments of stress or emotional overwhelm, it’s easy to get caught up in automatic reactions. Mindfulness teaches you how to slow down and become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations. By observing your experiences without judgment, mindfulness helps you respond more thoughtfully, rather than reacting on autopilot.
Practicing mindfulness allows you to develop emotional resilience and a greater sense of inner calm, helping you handle stress and difficult emotions with more clarity and balance.
